In days past, a scenic drive through the countryside was a common weekend pastime. Even today, lazily meandering down derelict roads and enjoying life’s simple pleasures can be a charming way to spend an afternoon. Whether you stop for a sweet remedy at a roadside peach stand or pause at an unsullied river to enjoy its rhythmic vibrations and surrounding wildlife, you can wander the day away while rejuvenating your mind, body and spirit.
Rediscover this forgotten American pastime by spending some time on one of America’s beautiful byways. These three breathtaking scenic drives are among my favorites, because they provide a wealth of side activities, whether it’s observing wildlife, hiking or stargazing some extraordinary skies. Take a short weekend trip, or relax for a week or more as you drink in all these great U.S. scenic drives have to offer.
Scenic Byway 12, Utah
The scenery along this 124-mile stretch in Southern Utah looks as though it was unrolled from the set of a classic Western film. This wonderful corridor to the West winds past slick-rock canyons, red rock cliffs, aspen and pine forests, alpine mountains and little chocolate-box towns. Stunning and unique , this scenic drive’s natural roadside attractions can easily provide a week of exploration.
Scenic Byway 12 also boasts the impressive Bryce Canyon National Park, a spectacular geological wonder. Here, you can witness red rock spires piercing the blue Utah sky. Known as hoodoos, these rock formations provide the perfect backdrop for a memorable photo. The park transcends an impressive 2,000 feet, with fossil-embedded hiking trails and snowshoeing prospects abound.
Seek solitude in a backcountry campsite and surrender yourself to the most magnificent night sky you may ever see. The clean, dry, thin Utah air combines with the altitude and complete darkness to make for excellent star-watching. Even on a moonless night you can view over 7,500 sparkling stars.
Seward Highway, Alaska
Alaska is the Helen of Troy of the Americas, with scenery of unparalleled beauty. It’s hard to find more varied terrain than here. From grand glaciers to knife-edged ridges and alpine valleys dotted with wild flowers reminiscent of the Wizard of Oz, you’re bound to experience nature like never before during your scenic drive through Alaska.
Seward highway, the 127-mile ribbon that wends its way from Anchorage to the south-central region of Alaska, features the most diverse topography one can imagine. From the marshlands of the Copper River Delta to the Chugach National Forest, you can view everything from saltwater bays and spruce forests to the sort of flora and fauna usually encountered only in dreams. Observe rock climbers in action, beluga whales mid-swim and Alaskan salmon spawning. Or pick your preferred outdoor activities along the way. Fish, hunt, hike, camp or ski - and inhale the clear air of a region replete with mountain waterfalls and gorgeous, golden-green meadows.
Acadia National Park Scenic Drive, Maine
Experience the bucolic attractions of New England on this 27-mile scenic drive which loops through Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine. As you make your way through this natural wonderland, pause to observe the puffins, peregrine falcons, spring warblers, and an occasional moose or bear in their natural habitat.
This short scenic drive takes only about four hours, including some stops to relish landscapes of unmatched beauty. If you get restless, utilize some of the 125 miles worth of hiking trails and experience the rustic beauty of this area on a more intimate level.
When you’re done, drive back through Bar Harbor and take advantage of a day cruise departing from the nearby port to watch the seals and whales in action. You can also visit the old haunts of the Rockefellers and Kennedys, and soak in more spectacular views while dining in places such as Galyn’s. After all, no trip to Maine is complete without a proper lobster feast. Extend your stay in this enchanting town and unwind at a cozy B&B for the weekend.
